Need for modal filters

Modal filters reduce rat running within residential neighbourhoods by requiring through traffic to stay on state government arterials. Streets Alive Yarra has published a map showing the location of modal filters in the City of Yarra.

Without modal filters, navigation apps send drivers on wiggle routes through residential neighbourhoods, as described in The Age:

The solution, as pointed out in the article, is to physically block through traffic, upgrading each neighbourhood to a Low Traffic Neighbourhood.

Our view

Streets Alive Yarra supports the article in The Age – our policy is that the City of Yarra should be covered by 30 km/h Low Traffic Neighbourhoods that are linked by a network of protected bike lanes (as well as a network of arterials).
