A new council was elected in October 2024. Now that a year has passed, let’s look back on who was elected, what scores we had given them, and how they performed for freedom, equality, social justice, responsibility, and a world of beauty, i.e. building a more beautiful, liveable, and accessible city by investing in walking, biking, trees, and place making.
Elected councillors
Nine councillors were elected, one from each ward, they’re shown below together with the scores they received before the election, which ranged from a best possible two green ticks to a worst possible two red crosses.

How they performed
Six of the nine councillors formed a voting bloc, and over the first year they have voted to:
- cancel the park outside Richmond Library
- narrow the Elizabeth Street bike lanes to bring back car parking
- cancel intersection treatments that were safer for people biking
Summary
In our opinion, Yarra is now governed by a backwards bloc who are reversing previous strategic direction, and previous gains made for a more beautiful, liveable, and accessible city, and it’s the wrong direction for an inner-city area that’s going to see a significant increase in its population.

You can join our fight for walking, biking, trees, and place making. Subscribe to our newsletter, come along to our meetings, and introduce our group to others who might be interested. New York City has a new Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who is committed to building better streets. If New York City can do it, we can too.
