Princes Hill Primary School is in the north-western section of the City of Yarra, near the Linear Park Reserve and the North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House.
Parents at the school have proposed a safety improvement at the intersection of Solly Avenue and Wilson Street, which would connect the school to the Inner Circle Rail Trail, the area’s major active transport route. The shaded green area represents new green open space, and the orange lines represent improved bike lanes.
Trial implementation
Parents propose to test the idea with a trial, using fast and low-cost road blocks, i.e. tactical urbanism.
The second phase would be to design a permanent implementation, remove the asphalt, and add protected bike lanes to Wilson Street.

Riding with my kid to school along the linear path is a relaxing and enjoyable experience; we get some exercise, bump into friends, enjoy the trees and nature, and travel quickly to school without cost to ourselves or the environment. But then the last 100 metres along a road next to the school is difficult and dangerous. Viewing transport infrastructure through the eyes of a 6 year old trying to ride to school shows how much cars are prioritised in our city and how much that restricts anyone not in a car. Fostering independence in our children starts with safe routes to school, and making our city safe enough for our children will make it safe for everyone.
