Road Safety Study

In 2020/21 Council determined to conduct a Road Safety Study in Alphington, for an area including the Alphington Primary School, and part funded by the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA). Consultation stage 1 occurred in July and August 2023. O’Brien Traffic was engaged to review the issues raised and to develop a Road Safety Plan (RSP).

Consultation stage 2 occurred in January and February 2024. Changes were made to the proposed Road Safety Plan, and treatments were endorsed on 17 December 2024.

New Deal for Schools study

In 2023-24 Alphington Primary School was the first school in the New Deal for Schools program, which is the flagship initiative of Yarra’s Transport Strategy 2022-2032. As part of the study, an audit was conducted of the routes that students took to school:

The audit found that most students live nearby and travel less than 2 km to get to school:

The audit made 32 findings, and associated recommendations, to improve safety for students walking or biking to school. As an example, the image below shows finding and recommendation #1. It’s unclear whether Council has committed to implementing all 32 recommendations.
