Streets Alive Yarra Inc. supports the draft Council Plan 2025-29, particularly the elements promising to deliver safety for people walking and biking, including:
- …a safe, welcoming and inclusive place for locals and visitors.
- Making our streets cleaner, greener and safer for everyone to enjoy.
- Helping people travel and commute more easily via all modes of transport.
- …streets which are fit for purpose and meet the needs of different users.
- …assets and infrastructure will respond to the needs of our growing community into the future.
- …planning for all modes of transport…
- Make our streets and shopping strips safer and more beautiful.
- Ensure people can move safely across the city using all modes of transport.
- Transport networks are better connected and accessible.
Together with elements that describe how such investments can be paid for:
- Ensure all decisions are financially sound, transparent and accountable to the community.
- Implement the Financial Sustainability Strategy.
We support the guiding principles, because we believe that following them will deliver outcomes that align with our proposals, which also reflect fairness, equity, and evidence.
We support the transport section, and remind Council that:
- ‘move safely‘ requires reallocation of street space
- the upcoming Kerbside and Parking Management Strategy can be designed to ensure that people who need to drive can find a vacant parking bay and avoid a fine, while incidentally raising tens of millions of dollars of additional revenue.
We support the financial sustainability section, and remind Council that implementing the Financial Sustainability Strategy means implementing the Pricing Policy, which means pricing on-street parking at market rates, because on-street parking bays are a private good (rivalrous and excludable).
Overall, we support the draft Council Plan 2025-29 and look forward to the improvements that will be delivered over the next four years.
