The City of Yarra is proposing to trial the closure of Station Street.
Streets Alive Yarra supports a 12-month trial of the closure of Station Street, for the simple reason that Yarra should gradually move toward calmer, safer streets. Traffic should be pushed to nominated arterials, such as Nicholson and Rathdowne.
Nominated arterials such as Nicholson and Rathdowne can form the boundaries of calm, quiet, safe residential precincts, similar to the superblocks of Barcelona.
The primary argument against the trial – that it will divert traffic to the bicycle priority route on Canning Street – isn’t valid if we take a precinct approach. A win-win can be achieved if both Station and Canning streets have low levels of through traffic, by diverting drivers onto nominated arterials such as Nicholson and Rathdowne.
