Proposed traffic calming

The City of Yarra is proposing to trial a closure at the end of Station Street.

Our view

Streets Alive Yarra supports a 12-month trial of the closure of Station Street, for the simple reason that Yarra should gradually move toward calmer, safer streets. Traffic should be pushed to declared arterials, such as the adjacent Nicholson Street.

Declared arterials such as Nicholson Street can form the boundaries of calm, quiet, safe residential precincts, similar to the superblocks of Barcelona.

The primary argument against the trial – that it will divert traffic to the bicycle priority route on Canning Street – isn’t valid if we take a precinct approach. A win-win can be achieved if both Station and Canning streets have low levels of through traffic, by diverting drivers onto declared arterials such as Nicholson Street.
