Why is it so difficult to improve infrastructure for walking and cycling? Hear a Councillor from the City of Adelaide (Helen Donovan) discuss the issue with their ex head of design (Daniel Bennett), on the Adelaide (un)Planned podcast:

The discussion focusses on the issue of behaviour change, and states that shaping the physical environment is the best way to affect behaviour. Research shows that 60% of the population (i.e. the biggest cohort) will be willing to cycle if safe cycling infrastructure is provided. They also point out that congestion charges would help induce behaviour change.

Conclusion

The podcast discussion supports our policy of increased investment in infrastructure for safer walking and cycling, as well as for the State Government to use demand response driving charges. On the issue of behaviour change, we believe the best approach is to use an ‘iterative trial’ approach, as Council is using for Elizabeth Street.
