Streets Alive Yarra has written to Richard Wynne, Victoria’s Planning Minister, asking for the state government to require local government councils to remove parking minimums from their planning schemes, for sites located within Melbourne’s Principle Public Transport Network, or for sites within a walking catchment area of each train station and tram stop.
Eliminating parking minimums would act to decrease traffic congestion, decrease air pollution, and decrease the cost of new housing. These are all issues of social justice for people who need to drive (traffic congestion), for people who live in Melbourne (air pollution), or for people on low incomes (cost of housing).
