Councils in Britain charge around £1 a week per cycle space to use them. In Yarra, where a permit for a car parking bay costs $56 per year, council could charge the same fee for each of the six bike spots, helping to pay off the cost of the hangar.
Southwark council has installed approximately 300 hangars, aiming to reach 500 by the end of 2022. Yarra could do better, offering 1,000 bike hangars across the municipality, which would result in a hangar within 150 metres of most homes. By placing hangars on-street, in the space of a former car parking bay, hangars can provide amenity without obstructing footpaths.
