Hangars enable more people to choose to bike

A bike hangar is a covered, lockable and secure pod which sits on the road. It takes up about the same amount of space as a parked car and it can hold 6 bikes securely and provides people, without access to store a bike at home, with a secure and convenient way to park their bike, so they can ride a bike more easily and reduce the need for rely on motorised transport.

Councils in Britain charge around £1 a week per cycle space to use them. In Yarra, where a permit for a car parking bay costs $50 per year, council could charge $50 per year for each of the six bike spots, helping to pay off the cost of the hangar.

Southwark council has installed approximately 300 hangars, aiming to reach 500 by the end of 2022. Yarra could do better, offering 1,000 bike hangars across the municipality, which would result in a hangar within 150 metres of most homes.

In Yarra, more people are using electric cargo bikes, which are slightly larger than traditional bikes and can be difficult to store in single-fronted terrace homes. Bike hangars are an ideal way to make bikes and electric cargo bikes a viable option for more people.
