Rose Street is in Yarra’s LAPM 9 precinct in the suburb of Fitzroy, and hosts the Rose Street Market, cafes and other businesses.
Rose Street Market
Over 700 pedestrians per hour walk on the market section of Rose Street on Saturdays and Sundays, with 20 per cent of pedestrians walking on the roadway. Using funding from VicRoads and the TAC, the section between Nicholson and Brunswick Streets will be transformed into the Rose Street Feet First 10 km/h shared space.
Throughout the Council consultation there was strong support for the project and its objective to improve pedestrian access, safety and the streetscape along Rose Street. There was also strong support to remove on-street parking to improve the shared space.
This is a great example of how residents and traders agree that street calming and safe travel infrastructure is good for everyone. Improving the street will increase patronage, revenue and profit for local businesses, as improving amenity for people. Once complete, we should aim to replicate this success on more small quiet shopping streets in Yarra.
Update April 2021
Cr Stone reports that construction is looking very pretty, the space will be much safer with a 10 m/h speed limit, and roads works should be completed by mid May.
Update December 2021
Mark Rowland reports that ‘it seems to have transformed the space and made it safer for people plus improved access‘.
