NACTO (USA) has released a new guide, Move! That! Bus!, with guidance on how to dramatically improve the quality of bus service in a city within two years.
Three actions
NACTO proposes three actions that governments should commit to:
Action 1: Frequent, all-day bus service
Action 2: Redesign streets
Action 3: policy reforms
Our view
The City of Yarra has bus routes too (not just trains and trams) and the NACTO recommendations can be applied here. We agree that significant reform is possible within two years. In particular, state and local government should collaborate to deliver:
- level access public transport stops, for both buses and trams
- demand responsive parking charges
- demand responsive driving charges
- parking maximums
