St Georges Road is a north-south arterial in Fitzroy, that continues north out of Yarra up to Preston. It’s a declared state government arterial and hosts the Route 11 tram. The northern section is designated as a Strategic Cycling Corridor while the centre section is a Bicycle Priority Route.

Street design

St Georges Road doesn’t have level-access tram stops or protected bike lanes, which isn’t good enough for a Strategic Cycling Corridor.

Crashes

Many people have been injured by crashes on St Georges Road, here are two examples from 2023.

State government introduces 40 km/h

In September 2023 the state government reduced the speed limit to 40 km/h (7am to 10pm):

More needs to be done

Considering the number of crashes on the road, the state government must do more to deliver a safe transport environment for people walking, biking, or using the tram; we suggest building protected (and level access) tram stops, and protected bike lanes.
